| Dental jurisprudence | The laws governing dentistry |
| Law | System of rules that regulate the actions of it's members and which it may enforce by the imposition of penalties |
| Civil law | A law related to actions and circumstances between individuals. Can be broken into contract law and tort law. |
| Dental Practice Act | State regulations that describe legal restrictions on the dentist, the hygienist, and other dental assistants |
| State Board of Dentistry | Agency of State government that governs the qualifications for the practice of dentistry within the state |
| Recipocity | One who has passed the dental requirements for one state that applies for the same "rights" in another state, without taking another written or clinical examination. |
| Direct Supervision | Dentist must be physically in the treatment facility and they must be available within distance to evaluate procedure |
| General Supervision | Dentist authorizes the work to be performed on patient by the dental auxiliary byt they're not required to be on the premises. |
| Contract | A binding agreement between two or more persons |
| Expressed contract | A contract, written or verbal, that describes what each party in the contract will do. |
| Implied contract | Consent for the procedure given by the patients act |
| Malpractice | Incorrect or negligent treatment given to a patient by a doctor, dentist, or healthcare provider |
| Negligence | The failure to exercise the standard care that a reasonable person would exercise in similar circumstances |
| Due Care | The care that any reasonable dental care personnel would do in the same circumstances |
| Tort | A Total wrongful act that results in injury to one person by another |
| Assault | Threat of touching a person without consent |
| Battery | The actual touching of another individual without consent |
| Libel | False and malicious written comments |
| Fraud | A deliberate deception that is practiced to secure unfair or unlawful gain |
| Good Samaritan Law | Protection for people who provide medical assistance to those in emergency situations who are not getting paid for it |
| American with Disabilities Act | Legislation passed by Congress in 1990 to end discrimination against people with disabilities. |
| Consent (form) | Form signed by the patient indicating the patients agreement to a particular procedure |
| Subpoena | Court order mandating an individual to appear at a particular time and date eith a specific reason to testify. |
| Ethics | What is morally right/wrong. Varies per person |
| HIPAA | The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act. Rules protect health care coverage for individuals who change jobs |
| Current Dental Terminology | CDT represents the collaberation of dental vendors, payers, providers, clearinghouses, and the government for a standard code set |
