Properties of Matter
Matter
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| matter | anything that has mass and takes up space |
| physical properties | characteristics that can be observed, measured, or tested |
| observable properties | properties of matter that can be observed (size, color, shape, texture, states of matter) (can tell with the 5 senses) |
| measurable properties | properties of matter that can be measured |
| mass | the amount of matter in an object and can be measured using a balance |
| volume | the amount of space an object takes up and can be measured with beakers and graduated cylinders |
| length | the distance from point A to point B and can be measured with rulers, meter sticks, or measuring tape |
| testable properties | properties of matter that can be tested |
| solubility | the ability to dissolve in water |
| relative density | the ability to float or sink compared to another substance |
| magnetism | matter that is composed of iron, nickel, or cobalt (metals) is magnetic |
| electrical conductivity/conductor | the ability for electricity to flow through |
| electrical insulators | block the flow of electricity |
| thermal conductivity/conductor | the ability for thermal energy (heat) to flow through ex. metal pan |
| thermal insulators | blocks the flow of thermal energy (heat) ex. oven mitt |
| state of matter | solid, liquid, or gas |
| physical change | when matter changes it's property but not it's chemical nature |
| chemical change | when matter becomes something completely new |
