Chemistry Unit 2
Term | Definition |
---|---|
Excited State | A state in which an atom has more energy than it does at its ground state. |
Ground State | The lowest energy state of a quantized system. |
Ionization Energy | The energy required to remove an electron from an atom or ion. |
Electronegativity | The ability of an atom in a chemical compound to attract electrons. |
Electromagnetic Spectrum | All of the frequencies or wavelengths of electromagnetic radiation. |
Avogadro's Number | 6.02x1023 the number of atoms or molecules in 1 mole. |
Electron Affinity | The energy change when an electron is acquired by a neutral atom. |
Mole | The SI base unit to measure the amount of the substance. |
Photon | A unit or quantum of light; particle of electromagnetic radiation. |
Orbital | A region in an atom where there is a high probability of finding electrons. |
Electron Configuration | The arrangement of electrons in an atom. |
Pauli Exclusion Principle | The principle that states that two particles of a certain class cannot be in exactly the same energy state. |
Hund's Rule | Singly occupied with one electron before any one orbital is doubly occupied, and all electrons in singly occupied orbitals have the same spin; the number of unpaired electrons is the maximum possible and these unpaired electrons bonds between atoms. |
