Math Vocabulary for Unit 2

expression a mathematical sentence involving only numbers, letter, and 1 or more operation symbols with NO equal sign
variable where a letter stands in for an unknown number/quantity
equivalent expression 2 expressions that can be written differently but that are equal, for example: 2 + 3 is an equivalent expression to 1+4
parentheses like brackets, symbols that group numbers
math operation adding, subtracting, multiplying or dividing
order of operations the rules/order in which math problems are to be solved (PEMDAS)
simplify to solve to the simplest form
brackets like parenthese, symbols that group numbers
numerical expressions a number phrase that has numbers, adding, subtracting, multiplying, or dividing
unknown quantity an amount that is not known, where a variable stands in for it
