Geothermal
Key Terms
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Closed-Loop System: | The heat exchange loop in a GSHP system that consists of the ground heat exchanger, the circulating pump, and the water-source heat pump in which the heat transfer fluid is not exposed to the atmosphere. |
| Direct Use: | Use of geothermal heat without first converting it to electricity, such as for space heating and cooling, food preparation, industrial processes, etc. |
| Flash Steam: | Steam produced when the pressure on a geothermal liquid is reduced. Also called flashing. |
| Forced Air: | System that conditions a space by circulating air through a heat exchanger or fan coil |
| Geothermal: | Of or relating to the Earth's interior heat. |
| Geothermal Energy: | The Earth's interior heat made available to man by extracting it from hot water or rocks. |
| Geothermal Heat Pumps: | Devices that take advantage of the relatively constant temperature of the Earth's interior, using it as a source and sink of heat for both heating and cooling. |
| Ground Source Heat Pump (GSHP): | A heat pump system that uses the ground as a heat source and/or heat sink. |
| Heat Exchanger: | A device for transferring thermal energy from one fluid to another. |
| Heat Pump: | A mechanical device used for heating and cooling which operates by pumping heat from a cooler to a warmer location. Heat pumps can draw heat from a number of sources, e.g., air, water, or earth, and are most often either air source or water source. |
| Horizontal Closed Loop: | A horizontal closed loop field is composed of pipes that run horizontally in the ground. |
| Open Loop: | A system using water from a well, lake or pond that is discharged to a drain, re-injected into a return well or returned to the same well, lake or pond it was extracted from. |
| Turbine: | A bladed, rotating engine activated by the reaction or impulse, or both, of a directed current of fluid. In electric power applications, such as geothermal plants, the turbine is attached to and spins a generator to produce electricity. |
| Vertical loop: | A ground loop oriented in the vertical direction, commonly in one or more vertical boreholes. |
