Types of sentences

Simple, Compound and Complex Sentences

What is a complex sentence? A complex sentence links ideas together using a main clause i.e. a clause that makes sense on its own and a subordinate clause, which doesn't express a complete thought.

What is a compound sentence? A compound sentence is made up of two main clauses connected by a conjunction.
Suddenly, the rickshaw stopped and Mohan tumbled out. Compound sentence
She froze in place while Mohan looked at her. Complex sentence
What is a simple sentence? A simple sentence has only one verb
Joe waited for the train. Simple sentence
The train was late. Simple sentence
Joe waited for the train, but the train was late. Compound sentence
Mary and Samantha left on the bus before I arrived, so I did not see them at the bus station. Compound sentence
While he waited at the train station, Joe realized that the train was late. Complex sentence
After they left on the bus, Mary and Samantha realized that Joe was waiting at the train station. Complex sentence
