Cooper Chapter 15

Punishment by Removal of a Stimulus

QuestionAnswer
Bonus Response Cost Procedure for implementing response cost in which the person is provided a reservoir of reinforcers that are removed in predetermined amounts contingent on the occurrence of the target behaviour
Contingent Observation The person is repositioned within an existing setting such that observation is ongoing activities remain, but access to reinforcement is lost (i.e. "sit and watch")
Exclusion Time-Out The person is removed from the environment for a specified period, contingent on the occurrence of the targeted inappropriate behaviour
Hallways Time- Out Student is directed to leave the classroom and sit in the hallway
Non- exclusion Time-Out Contingent on the occurrence of the target behaviour, the person remains within the setting, but does not have access to reinforcement, for a specified period
Partition Time-Out The person remains within the time-in setting, but his view within the setting is restricted by a partition, wall, cubicle, or similar structure
Planned Ignoring When social reinforcers - usually attention, physical contact - are removed for a brief period, contingent on the occurrence of an inappropriate behaviour
Response Cost Functional alternative to time out; contingent loss of reinforcers (i.e. fines) producing a decrease of the frequency of behaviour
Time-Out from Positive Reinforcement AKA Time-out; Withdrawal of the opportunity to earn positive reinforcement or the loss of access to positive reinforcers for a specified time, contingent of the occurrence of the behaviour
Time-Out Ribbon A coloured band that is placed on a child's wrist and becomes discriminative for receiving reinforcement (i.e. when ribbon is on child's wrist = can earn reinforcement, but if child misbehaves ribbon is removed)
Response Cost Example A child loses a token on their token board for misbehavior
