What is a verb phrase? A group of words that does the job of a single verb, there is a principal verb and one or more helping verbs. The tourists {had lost} their luggage.
What is a transitive verb? A transitive verb shows action passing from the doer to the receiver. Clarise read the newspaper.
When is a verb transitive? A verb is transitive if it has a direct object or if it contains a form of the verb "BE" plus a past participle. The workers completed the job.
What is a direct object? A direct object is the word that answers the question "whom" or "what " after the verb. The boy put the skates on the shelf.
What is an intransitive verb? An intransitive verb is one that has no receiver of its actio; the subject is the doer of the action. Some flowers grow very well.
What is a linking verb? A linking verb links a noun, pronoun, or adjective to the subject in the sentence. The capitol of the United States [is] Washington,D.C. (page 447)

What is the predicate of a sentence? The part that says something aboutt he subject. A flock of geese {flew high overhead.}
What is the complete predicate? All of the words that say something about the subject. The pilot {broke the sound barrier.}
What is the simple predicate? The main word or group of words in the complete prediate. The pilot {broke} the sound barrier.
What is the compound subject? Consists of two or more connected subjects that have the same verb. The usual connecting word is "and " or "or". {Paris and London} remain favorite tourist attractions.
