Amphiarthroses Slightly movable joints.
Appendicular skeleton Bones are attached to the body.
Appositional growth Growth resulting from material being deposited on the surface.
Articular cartilage Thin layer of hyaline cartilage that covers the ends of long bones and joints.
Articulation A joint.
Axial skeleton Bones of the head, neck, and trunk.
Diaphysis The long straight shaft of a long bone.
Diarthroses Freely movable joints characterized by a joint cavity.
Endosteum Membranous lining of a cavity within a bone.
Epiphyseal line The remnant of the epiphyseal plate after the cartilage calcifies and growth ceases.
Epiphyseal plate The cartilaginous plate between the epiphysis and diaphysis of the bone.
Epiphysis The end of a long bone.
Hematopoiesis The production of blood or it cells.
Osteoblasts Bone forming cells.
Osteoclasts Cells that destroy, breakdown, or reabsorb bone tissue.
Osteocytes Mature bone cells.
Osteogenesis Formation of bone.
Osteon Structural unit of bone.
Pectoral girdle Attachment of the upper extremities in the chest region.
Pelvic girdle Attachment for the lower extremities.
Periosteum Tough white outer membrane that covers a bone.
Sutures Invisible fibrous joints between the flat bones of the skull.
Synarthrosis Immovable joints.
