Why does Macbeth want Banquo and Fleance dead? Banquo: Too noble; Willing to take risks; Mind never stops working; Wise; Afraid of him; Banquo’s children will get the throne, not Macbeth’s Fleance: Is Banquo’s son, and will inherit the throne
What is Macbeth's plan for killing Banquo and Fleance? Does it work? Plan: To hire murders to kill them when the go riding Work?: Half way, banquo dies and fleance escapes
Macbeth says, "The worm that's fled Hath nature that in time will venom breed, No teeth for the present." What does that mean? It's referring to a snake, Banquo is a venomous snake, venom being the info & thinking skills he has & is eliminated but his son (venom breed) has escaped & will become dangerous in the future (that in time venom breed) but is not dangerous at the moment (no teeth for the present)
Who (what) did Macbeth see at the banquet table? Banquo’s ghost
How does Lady Macbeth cover for Macbeth at the banquet? What excuses does she give for his wild talk? He has had fits of madness since he was a child, too pay attention angers him and prolongs them
Who else was missing from the banquet table (besides Banquo)? Macduff
Macbeth says, "I am in blood Stepped in so far that should I wade no more, Returning were as tedious as go o'er." What does he mean? That he has gotten in too deep, and can’t get out, he murdered, and it drove him mad, and he did it again, worsening it, but he can't go back to the way it was before, because his hands are dirty, and he is no longer a descent man
What does Hecate want the witches to do? To trick Macbeth into believing he is greater that fate and death
What does Lennox think about Macbeth, Fleance, and Duncan's sons? Macbeth: Is guilty Fleance: Is innocent Ducan’s sons: Are innocent
Act IV
Witch 2 says, "By the pricking of my thumb, Something wicked this way comes." Who comes? Macbeth
What is Macbeth's attitude towards the witches this time? Anger Demanding
What four things did the witches show Macbeth? What does each show/say? What is Macbeth's reaction? First apparition(an armed head): S:beware macduff, beware the thane of fife R:this is what he feared, and is thankful for the advice Second Apparition(a bloody child): S: be violent/bold/firm, laugh at other mens powers; no one born from a woman can harm him R:don’t need to kill macduff; no reason to fear macduff; will kill macduff 3rd apparition(child w/ crown&tree): S: be brave/proud don't worry about hatred/resentment/conspiracy won't be defeated til Birnam Wood marches to fight him @ Dunsinane hill R:that won't happen, these were good omens, murders wont ever threaten him The line of royals after he dies: Metaphorically tells him banquos descendants will be kings R: don't want to see, horrible sight
Macbeth says (about the witches), "Infected be the air whereon they ride, And damned all those that trust them!" What is Macbeth, in effect, saying about himself? To curse himself
Where is Macduff? England
Why does Macbeth have Macduff's family and servants killed? To send a message to macduff not to go against him, to hurt macduff
Why does Lady Macduff's son say liars and swearers are fools? Because there are enough lairs and swearers to hang all the honest men who hang them
Malcolm says, "Angels are bright still, though the brightest fell. Though all things foul would wear the brows of grace, Yet grace must still look so." What does that mean? That the brightest angel, the devil fell from heaven, that a good honest man, the best man, has fallen from grace and honesty. Evil tries to disguise itself, but good must always look the same
Macduff says, "Oh, Scotland, Scotland!" Why? Because it is forsaken To test if Malcom is loyal to him or macbeth
What news does Ross bring to Macduff? Scotland has fallen into disrepair, it is a terrible place to be now There is a rebellion against macbeth His children are dead, as is his wife, and servants
Act V
What do the doctor and gentlewoman see Lady Macbeth doing? What do they decide to do about it? Sleepwalking Sleep talking Basically admitting to the murders They decide to look after her, remove potentially harmful objects
What does Macbeth want the doctor to do for his wife? Cure her
What trick does Malcolm use to hide the number of men in his army? He has every man break off a branch of a tree in Birnam Wood and hold it in front of him
Malcolm says, "And none serve with him but constrained things Whose hearts are absent, too." What does that mean? That no one wants to fight with him, and those that are forced to don't fight with their hearts in it/very vigorously
What is Macbeth's reaction to Lady Macbeth's death? She would’ve died anyways
What is Macbeth's reaction to the news that Birnam Wood is moving? Liar, slave Lets fight them all, but i’ll probably die
Who first fights Macbeth? What happens? Young siward, he dies
Macbeth says to Macduff, "But get thee back, my soul is too much charged With blood of thine already." To what is he referring? The murder of macduffs family
When does Macbeth know he's in trouble? When macduff tells him that instead of being born, he was cut out of the womb before labor.
How does Macbeth die? Beheaded in battle with Macduff
Who will be King of Scotland? Malcolm
