Equations, variables and inequalities
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| inequality | two expressions that are not equal to each other, < or > |
| equation | two expressions that are equal to each other, has an = sign |
| evaluate | to substitute a number in for a variable, then solve |
| like terms | has the same variable so they can be combined (example: 3x + 15x) |
| PEMDAS | order of operations = parentheses, exponent, multiply or divide, add or subtract |
| balanced equation | the variable must be alone or isolated on one side of the equation |
| inverse operation | opposite operation, add/subtract or multiply/divide, used to isolate the variable |
| dependent variable | represented by the y-coordinate, it is dependent on the independent variable, so it always changes (ex. total cost) |
| independent variable | represented by the x-coordinate, it is fixed or constant so it stays the same (ex. time, number of items) |
| ≤ | less than or equal to |
| ≥ | greater than or equal to |
| 6t+19s-10s-2t (combine the like terms) | 9s+4t |
| 17 = x +4 (do inverse operation to solve) | x = 13 |
| 15x = 105 (do inverse operation to solve) | x = 7 |
| c-12 > 30, if c = 13 (substitute the number in for the variable, solve, is the statement true?) | 1 is not > 30, false |
| 10 + p ≥ 20, if p = 15 (substitute the number in for the variable, solve, is the statement true?) | 25 ≥ 20, true |
