| opponent | someone who you try to defeat in a competition, game |
| ring | a small square area surrounded by ropes, where people box or wrestle |
| race | a physical activity in which people compete against each other |
| tournament | a competition in which players compete against each other in a series of games until there is one winner |
| score | to win a point in a sport, game, competition, or test |
| pitch | a marked out area of ground on which a sport is played SYNONYM: field |
| court | an area made for playing games such as tennis , basketball |
| course | an area of land designed for playing golf |
| bat | a long wooden stick with a special shape that is used in some sports and games e.g a baseball , cricket |
| referee | someone who makes sure that the rules of a sport such as football, basketball, or boxing, are followed |
| umpire | someone who makes sure that the rules are obeyed in baseball, cricket, tennis, or hockey |
| spectator | someone who is watching an event or game |
| Extreme sport / X sport | an extreme sport is one that is done in a way that has much more risk and so is more dangerous than an ordinary form of the sport |
| martial arts | sport such as judo or karate, in which you fight with your hands and feet. |
| coach | someone who trains a person or team in a sport |
