Energy Flow Vocabulary Practice

TermDefinition
Ecology The study of the relationships and interactions of living things with one another and with their environment
Biotic Factor The living parts of an ecosystem (Ex. grass, trees, insects. . .)
Abiotic Factor The nonliving parts of an ecosystem (Ex. water, sunlight, soil . . .)
Population A group of organisms of the same type, or species, living together in the same area
Community The living part of an ecosystem (ex. grass, trees, animals. . . )
Ecosystem Consists of all the living and nonliving things in a given area
Energy Roles in an Ecosystem Producer, Consumer, Decomposer
Autotroph An organism that makes its own food for energy (Ex. plants)
Heterotroph An organism that must consume other organisms for energy (Ex. animals
Producer Organism that makes its own food for energy
Sun Ultimate source of energy in an ecosystem
Consumer Organism that feeds on producers or other consumers for energy
Herbivore Plant-eater
Carnivore Meat-eater
Omnivore Eats both plants and meat
Scavenger An animal that eats animals that are already dead
Decomposer Organisms that break down dead organisms for energy and return raw materials/nutrients to the soil
Food Chain Shows how food energy is transferred from one organism to another
Food Web all the possible food chains in an ecosystem
Feeding Level Location of a consumer along a food chain
Primary consumer Consumer that eats producers
Secondary consumer Consumer that eats animals that eat producers
Energy Pyramid Shows the reduced amount of energy that moves from one feeding level to another
1st level consumer is always an Herbivore
2nd level consumer is either an Omnivore or a carnivore
Competition When organisms struggle with each other for resources
Predation Interaction in which one organism hunts and kills another organism for food
Predator Hunts, captures, and eats prey
Prey Hunted and eaten by predators
