What news does Ross bring Macbeth? He is the thane of Cawdor
Banquo, like Macbeth, is surprised that the witches have predicted Macbeth's new title. He is, however, leery. What does he say about the motives of the "instruments of darkness"? That they will tell half the truth to cause your destruction
Malcolm describes Cawdor's last moments before his execution. What is Duncan's reply? That you can't tell what someone is thinking based on their face. That he had fully trusted Cawdor
Macbeth says, "Stars, hide your fires, Let not light see my black and deep desires." What are Macbeth's desires? To be king, meaning he has to eliminate his brother Malcolm
After Lady Macbeth reads the letter, what does she tell us is her opinion of Macbeth, and how does she plan to help him? In her opinion, He is too kind, Ambitious, A good person, Not a cheater She plans to help him by persuading him to go after the crown and talking him out of whatever is holding him back
What is Lady Macbeth's "prayer" to the spirits after she learns Duncan is coming"? To make her more manly, and more cruel so that she can murder the king
What advice does Lady Macbeth give Macbeth when he arrives home? To look like nothing is going on, like he is not going to murder someone, to look innocent and peaceful
What are Macbeth's arguments to himself against killing Duncan? That by doing an act of violence, he tells others it's okay for them to do it Justice will get him He is trusted to protect the king He should be preventing murder as a host, not committing it He is a good, uncorrupt, humble leader, whose legacy will live on It will upset everyone
What arguments does Lady Macbeth use to convince Macbeth to commit the murder? He is a coward if he doesn’t She will consider his act as his feelings of love He is more manly if he does it; He needs to keep his promise to do it
What is Lady Macbeth's plan? When the king is asleep, they will send the drunk guards away to smoke and murder the king, then, when the news “reaches them” they will act as if in grief.
Act II
What is Macbeth's lie to Banquo about the witches' predictions? That he doesn't think about them. That only part is true
What is the signal Lady Macbeth is to give Macbeth to let him know that she has taken care of the guards (grooms)? ringing a bell
What excuse does Lady Macbeth give for not killing Duncan herself? He reminds her of her father when sleeping
After Macbeth kills Duncan, he goes to Lady Macbeth and is concerned about not being able to say "Amen." What is her advice to him? Not to worry or it'll drive him crazy
Then, Macbeth is worried about hearing a voice saying, "Macbeth does murder sleep." What does Lady Macbeth then tell him to do? To wash up and make it look like the guards did it
Why won't Macbeth take the daggers back to the scene of the crime? he's afraid to think of what he's done
Who was knocking? Macduff and Lennox
What three things does drinking provoke? Turn your nose red, Make you sleep, Make you urinate
How does Lennox describe the night, and what is Macbeth's response? Chaotic, Windy Cries of grief in the air Screams of death Terrible voices predicting catastrophe Owl noises all night Earth shaking
What did Macduff discover? The king was murdered
Macduff says, "Oh, gentle lady, 'Tis not for you to hear what I can speak. The repetition, in a woman's ear, Would murder as it fell." What is ironic about this? She killed the guy, and was the first to see him after he died
What excuse or explanation did Macbeth give for killing the guards (grooms)? What is his real reason? that his love for the king, and the shock of seeing him dead drove him to kill the obvious murders His real reason is that they saw him murder the king
Why do Malcolm and Donalbain leave? It's not safe and it's too easy for the murder to hide his identity
Why does Ross not believe Malcolm and Donalbain were responsible for Duncan's murder? The king supported them
