| Cold War | after WWII, the long period of intense rivalry between the Soviet Union and the US |
| satellite nation | a nation that is dominated politically and economically by a more powerful nation |
| Truman Doctrine | The Truman Doctrine was an effort to stop the spread of communism. It said that the United States would help countries that were threatened by "armed minorities or outside pressures". |
| Marshall Plan | An American plan to help European nations rebuild their economies after World War II |
| Berlin Airlift | when western countries delivered much needed food and supplies to the city of Berlin through the air because all other routes were blocked by the Soviet Union. |
| Berlin Wall | The Berlin Wall was built by the communist government of East Berlin in 1961. The wall separated East Berlin and West Berlin. It was built in order to prevent people from fleeing East Berlin |
| NATO | NATO stands for North Atlantic Treaty Organization. It is an alliance of democratic and western countries including much of Western Europe, Canada, and the United States. |
| Warsaw Pact | The Warsaw Pact was an alliance between the Soviet Union and other Eastern Europe communist nations. |
| UN-United Nations | A world organization established in 1945 to provide peaceful resolutions to international conficts. |
| Iron Curtain | The iron curtain was a descriptive term or symbol used to describe the border between the communist and democratic countries of Europe. It kept information and people from crossing from the communist east to the democratic west. |
| Korean War | a UN military action to prevent the spread of communism from North Korea to South Korea (which were supported by China and the Soviet Union) |
| 38th parallel | the dividing line between South and North Korea |
| demilitarized zone | DMZ- an area in which military forces are prohibited |
| McCarthyism | This is the term given to accusations of treason or disloyalty without having evidence. It comes from a time when Senator McCarthy of the US made several accusations of people being communists and traitors during the Cold War. |
| Bay of Pigs Invasion | the failed invasion of Cuba in 1961 backed by the US |
| Cuban Missile Crisis | a major Cold War confrontation in 1962 when Kennedy ordered Soviet ships carrying missiles to be blocked from entering Cuba |
| NASA-National Aeronautical and Space Administration | a government agency that directs the American Space program |
| Vietcong | Vietnamese guerrillas who opposed the noncommunist government of South Vietnam |
| guerrilla warfare | a type of warfare in which small military groups use surprise attacks and other tactics |
| domino theory | the belief that if South Vietnam fell to communism, other countries in the region would follow like a row of falling dominoes |
| Gulf of Tonkin Resolution | a Congressional resolution passed in 1964 that authorized military action in Vietnam |
| Tet Offensive | Vietcong surprise attacks on South Vietnamese cities on the Vietnamese New Year's holiday in 1968 |
| Vietnam War | a US military action to keep South Vietnam from falling to the communists supported by China. Called the "living room war" as it was the 1st war seen on television. |
| Red Scare | The Red Scare was a time of extreme anti-communism in the United States. People were scared that communists had infiltrated the government. |
| Space Race | The Space Race was a competition between the United States and the Soviet Union to explore space. |
| Communism | An economic system based on government ownership and control of resources. |
| Arms Race | A competition between the United States and the Soviet Union to manufacture the most nuclear weapons. They also tried to outdo each other in weapons technology and defense. |
