TermDefinition
Minerals Pure elements or compounds that occur naturally, often found as crystals within Earth’s crust and mix to form all the different kinds of rock
Igneous rock Rock that is formed by the cooling and solidification of lava or magma
Magma Molten rock below the surface of the ground
Lava Molten rock above the surface of the ground
Sedimentary rock Rock that is formed by the compaction or concretion of smaller particles of rock or minerals
Sediments Small particles of rock or minerals
Weathering When chemical and physical processes break down rock
Erosion When sediments are carried away by wind or water
Deposition When sediments are piled up by wind or water
Compaction When sediments are pushed together to form a rock
Cementation When minerals grow between sediments and “glue” them together into a new rock
Metamorphic rock Rock that is formed by heat and pressure deep in Earth’s crust
Energy The ability of a system to do work; required for changes to happen within a system
Rock cycle Earth’s rocks change from one type into another over time due to various Earth processes; changes occur in mineral compositions and physical structures
Cycle A repeated sequence of events
Convergent Plate Boundary where two tectonic plates come together
Divergent Plate Boundary Where two tectonic plates move apart
Transform Boundary Where two tectonic plates slide past each other
