QuestionAnswer
Atom The basic unit of a chemical element made up of three subatomic particles.
Proton Positive charge atomic subatomic particle found in the nucleus of an atom.
Neutron No charge or neutral atomic subatomic particle found in the nucleus of an atom.
Electron Negative charge atomic subatomic particle found outside the nucleus of an atom.
Atom Nucleus Structure located in the center of an atom made up of protons and neutrons.
Periodic Table Table that provides information and organizes all the elements.
Atomic Number Found on the periodic table that is equal to the number of protons. Also a whole number.
Atomic Mass (Weight) Number Found on the periodic table that is the sum "total" number of protons and neutrons in the nucleus of an atom. Usually in decimal form.
Families (Groups) The vertical columns of elements on the periodic table numbered from 1 - 18.
Periods The horizonatal rows of elements on the periodic table numbered from 1 - 7.
Metals Periodic Table Location Found on left side of zigzag line on the periodic table. Hydrogen is on left side but is not a metal.
Nonmetals Periodic Table Location Found on right side of zigzag line on the periodic table.
Metalloids Have properties or characterisitcs of both metals and nonmetals. Found along "touching: the zigzag line. Aluminum touches the zigzag line but is a metal.
