Ch 23 Test Review

Chapter 23 Organic Compounds Test Review

QuestionAnswer
Part A Vocabulary Review 1. hydrocarbons with only single bonds saturated hydrocarbons
2. hydrocarbons that have at least one double or triple bond unsaturated hydrocarbons
3. most compounds that contain carbon organic compounds
4. large molecules made up of many smaller organic molecules that have formed new bonds and are linked together polymers
5. organic compounds whose structural formulas contain the benzene ring aromatic compounds
6. biological compounds that contain twice as many hydrogen atoms as oxygen atoms carbohydrates
7. polymers formed from amino acids proteins
8. compounds with the same chemical formula but different molecular structures and shapes isomers
9. polymers that control the activities and reproduction of cells nucleic acids
10. small molecules that form links in polymer chains monomers
11. a mixture of thousands of carbon compounds petroleum
12. polymers used in shopping bags and plastic bottles polyethylene
13. made up of only carbon and hydrogen atoms hydrocarbon
14. process of separating petroleum into its individual compounds by boiling point fractional distillation
15. biological compounds that include fats and oils lipids
16. hydrocarbons in which one or more hydrogen atoms have been replaced with atoms of other elements substituted hydrocarbons
Part B Concept Review 1. C6H6 is the formula for benzene. Benzene’s carbon atoms have three single bonds and three double bonds. In the space provided, draw the structural formula for benzene. Hint: Benzene is a ring structure; when drawing this make sure you have 8 electrons around every oxygen; use your notes since I can't draw this on study stacks.
2. Phenol is an aromatic compound made up of a benzene molecule with an –OH group substituted for one of the hydrogens. Its formula is C6H5OH. In the space below, draw the structural formula for phenol. You can redraw the Benzene ring and substitute a -H with an -OH which makes it a substituted hydrocarbon
3. How are monomers and polymers related? monomers are the individual molecules that make up polymers
Classification and Example 4. used in structure and repair of body tissues d and l
5. contains hydrogen and oxygen atoms in a 2:1 ratio c and h
6. substituted hydrocarbon with –OH groups replacing hydrogen b and k
7. Its structural formula contains the benzene ring. a and j
8. combines through peptide bonds g and i
9. contains same elements as carbohydrates but in different proportions e and n
10. polymers that control heredity and cell activities f and m
