| two party | a party system where two major political parties dominate the political landscape |
| third party | a person or group besides the two primarily involved in a situation, especially a dispute |
| platform | the declared policy of a political party or group |
| plank | a fundamental point of a political or other program |
| national comittee | an organization which, by virtue of the bylaws of a political party |
| caucus | a meeting at which local members of a political party register their preference among candidates running for office or select delegates to attend a convention |
| precinct | a district of a city or town as defined for police purposes |
| ward | an administrative division of a city or borough that typically elects and is represented by a councilor or councilors |
| political machine | a political group in which an authoritative leader or small group command the support of a corps of supporters and businesses, who receive rewards for their efforts |
| direct primary | functions as a preliminary election whereby voters decide their party's candidates |
| closed primary | People may vote in a party's primary only if they are registered members of that party prior to election day |
| open primary | a primary election in which voters are not required to declare party affiliation. |
| plurality | the fact or state of being plural. |
| majority | the greater number |
| petition | a formal written request, typically one signed by many people, appealing to authority with respect to a particular cause |
