Chapter 8 - Fraction

Fractions

TermDefinition
equivalent fractions fractions that represent the same number or quantity
mixed number a number made up of a whole number and a fraction
fraction a number that represents part of a whole or part of a set
numerator The number written above the line in a fraction. It tells how many equal parts are being used
denominator The bottom number in a fraction
improper fraction a fraction in with a numerator that is greater than or equal to the denominator
simplest form a fraction in which the numerator and the denominator have no common factor greater than 1
prime number a whole number that has exactly two factors, 1 and itself.
composite number a whole number that has more than two factors
greatest common factor the greatest of the common factors of two or more numbers
benchmark fraction Common fractions used for estimating, such as 1/4, 1/3, 1/2, 2/3, & 3/4.
least common multiple The smallest multiple (other than zero) that two or more numbers have in common.
