the periodic table

chapter 25

QuestionAnswer
periodic means at regular intervals
in the periodic table elements are arranged in order of increasing atomic mass
Dmitri Mendeleev made the first periodic table
an element is a substance made of one type of atom
vertical columns are called groups or families
horizontal rows of elements are called periods
noble gases are also called inert gases
transition metals are found in the middle of the periodic table
a diagram of an atom is also called a Bohr diagram
atomic number is the number of protons or electrons
mass number is the number of protons and neutrons
number of electrons on shell 1 2
location of protons and neutrons nucleus
to find the number of neutrons subtract the atomic number from the mass number
number of electrons on shell 2 and 3 8
atoms of elements in group 1 lose one electron to become a 1+ positive ion
atoms of elements in group 2 lose two electrons to become a 2+ ion
atoms of elements in group 3 lose three electrons to become a 3 + ion
atoms of elements in group 4 share electrons to form covalent bonds
atoms of elements in group 5 gain 3 electrons to form a 3- ion
atoms of elements in group 6 gain 2 electrons to form a 2- ion
atoms of elements in group 7 gain 1 electron to form a 1- ion
atoms of elements in group 8 do not react as their outer shell is full
the formula for methane is CH4
the formula for ammonia is NH3
an ionic bond is formed when positive and negative ions attract
an ion is a charged atom

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
