Chapter 7 Vocab
Term | Definition |

Coefficient | the number out in front of a variable. |
Constant Term | A number in an expression that is not multiplied by a variable. |
Equation | A mathematical sentence in which two expressions appear on either side of an “equals” sign (=), showing that the two sides are equal. |
Expression | A combination of individual terms, separated by plus or minus signs, but does not contain an equal sign. |
Evaluate | To find the numerical value of. To evaluate an expression, plug the number in for the variable and solve using order of operations |
Inequality | An inequality consists of two expressions on either side of an inequality symbol: Greater than, less than, greater than or equal to, less than or equal to |
Quotient | The result after dividing two numbers; the answer to a division problem |
Reciprocal | A pair of numbers that, when multiplied together, equal 1; also called multiplicative inverse |
Distributive Property | When you multiply all parts of an expression inside parentheses, by the number or variable on the outside of the parentheses. |
Inverse Operation | An operation that undoes another operation. For example, multiplication is the inverse operation for division. |
Rate | A ratio comparing two quantities, often a comparison of time. |
Unit Rate | A rate with a denominator of one when simplified. |
