Chapter 7 Vocab

TermDefinition
Coefficient the number out in front of a variable.
Constant Term A number in an expression that is not multiplied by a variable.
Equation A mathematical sentence in which two expressions appear on either side of an “equals” sign (=), showing that the two sides are equal.
Expression A combination of individual terms, separated by plus or minus signs, but does not contain an equal sign.
Evaluate To find the numerical value of. To evaluate an expression, plug the number in for the variable and solve using order of operations
Inequality An inequality consists of two expressions on either side of an inequality symbol: Greater than, less than, greater than or equal to, less than or equal to
Quotient The result after dividing two numbers; the answer to a division problem
Reciprocal A pair of numbers that, when multiplied together, equal 1; also called multiplicative inverse
Distributive Property When you multiply all parts of an expression inside parentheses, by the number or variable on the outside of the parentheses.
Inverse Operation An operation that undoes another operation. For example, multiplication is the inverse operation for division.
Rate A ratio comparing two quantities, often a comparison of time.
Unit Rate A rate with a denominator of one when simplified.
