| Term | Definition |

| Alliteration | when the same consonant sounds are repeated in neighboring words. |
| Free Verse Poem | Type of poetry where there is no set pattern. There is also no set rhythm or rhyme. |
| Imagery | Use of details to help the reader imagine something. Can describe how something looks, sounds, tastes, smells, or feels. |
| Metaphor | A metaphor compares two things but without using the words "like" or "as" Ex: The woman is an angel. |
| Narrator | The person telling the story |
| Onomatopoeia | Term that describes a word that sounds like the object or thing that it names. Ex: buzz, fizz, boom |
| Rhyme | When two words have the same end sounds |
| Simile | Compares two things using "like" or "as". Ex. The snow was as soft as a pillow |
| Stanza | The sections that poems are divided into. |
| Theme | What the author wanted you to learn from the poem. "The Message" |
| Tone | How the author feels about the subject |
