Poetry

TermDefinition
Alliteration when the same consonant sounds are repeated in neighboring words.
Free Verse Poem Type of poetry where there is no set pattern. There is also no set rhythm or rhyme.
Imagery Use of details to help the reader imagine something. Can describe how something looks, sounds, tastes, smells, or feels.
Metaphor A metaphor compares two things but without using the words "like" or "as" Ex: The woman is an angel.
Narrator The person telling the story
Onomatopoeia Term that describes a word that sounds like the object or thing that it names. Ex: buzz, fizz, boom
Rhyme When two words have the same end sounds
Simile Compares two things using "like" or "as". Ex. The snow was as soft as a pillow
Stanza The sections that poems are divided into.
Theme What the author wanted you to learn from the poem. "The Message"
Tone How the author feels about the subject
