Mixtures (solution, solvent, solute, concentration)

| mixture | a combination of two or more substances that are not chemically combined, so each substance keeps its original identity |
| solubility | the ability of a substance to dissolve |
| suspension | a mixture that does NOT appear to be a single substance, where the particles are evenly spread out, and are large enough to settle to the bottom |
| colloid | a mixture that DOES appear to be a single substance, where the particles are evenly spread out, but are NOT heavy enough to settle to the bottom |
| element | a pure substance that cannot be broken down into simpler substances |
| metal | an element that is shiny and conducts heat/electricity well |
| nonmetal | an element that is dull, and conducts heat and electricity poorly |
| metalloid | an element that has properties of both metals and nonmetals |
| compound | a substance made up of two or more elements that have been chemically combined to form something new |
