Mixtures (solution, solvent, solute, concentration)

solution a mixture where two or more substances are spread out evenly between one another, giving the appearance of a single substance
solvent in a solution, the substance that does the dissolving
solute in a solution, the substance that dissolves
concentration measure of how much solute is dissolved in a solvent
mixture a combination of two or more substances that are not chemically combined, so each substance keeps its original identity
solubility the ability of a substance to dissolve
suspension a mixture that does NOT appear to be a single substance, where the particles are evenly spread out, and are large enough to settle to the bottom
colloid a mixture that DOES appear to be a single substance, where the particles are evenly spread out, but are NOT heavy enough to settle to the bottom
element a pure substance that cannot be broken down into simpler substances
metal an element that is shiny and conducts heat/electricity well
nonmetal an element that is dull, and conducts heat and electricity poorly
metalloid an element that has properties of both metals and nonmetals
compound a substance made up of two or more elements that have been chemically combined to form something new
