Sentence Structure

TermDefinition
Subject who or what the sentence is about; always a noun or pronoun
Predicate what the subject is doing; always a verb
Fragment a group of words missing a subject, predicate, and/or does not express a complete thought
Run-On Sentence a group of words that includes more than one simple sentence without proper punctuation
Comma Splice two independent clauses separated only by a comma, making it a run-on sentence
Independent Clause a group of words that contains a subject, predicate, and expresses a complete thought
Dependent Clause a group of words that contains a subject and predicate, but does not express a complete thought; begins with a subordinating conjunction or relative pronoun
Coordinating Conjunction seven connecting words represented by the acronym FANBOYS
