What is unusual about the narration of this story? Third person limited; through the eyes of buck
Explain why Buck is called the "undisputed master" of Judge Miller's place. He is superior to the other dogs at the ranch and he thinks it is his realm
What is the setting of the novel? How does the gold rush affect the setting? Santa Clara Valley California 1896; The setting changes to the Klondike which is between Alaska and Canada
Explain why Manual is referred to as an "undesirable acquaintance". He knows him but ends up betraying by kidnapping
What caused Manual's downfall? to gamble he had to have money
Describe the fight between Buck and the kidnapper. Buck tried to attack but was thrown down to the ground and choked repeatedly.
What is denied Buck during the next two days? What is he determined to do? He didn't eat or drink. He showed his anger and wrath for whoever first fell foul on him. He would never let anyone put a rope around his neck again.
Describe the interactions between Buck and the man in the red sweater. Where is he now? Buck tries repeatedly to attack him but the man hits him with a hatchet and club. In an iron cage in Seattle, Washington; Buck submits and the man pats him on the head
Who are Buck's new owners? Where was he brought? Perrault and Francois; North to the Yukon territory
Who was sold with Buck, and what other dogs did he meet? Curly was sold with buck and the other dogs were Spitebergen and Dave
Explain what happened to Curly when she approached the husky in a friendly way. Other Husky's jump in and had Curly dead (Curly's face was ripped open from eye to jaw.)
What did Buck learn from this experience? That when you're down that's the end of it
How does Buck feel about Spritz? Why? Buck hated him with a bitter and deathless hatred. Because he ran out of his tongue and laughed
How does Buck feel about hauling a sled? Why? He thinks it is beneath him because he thinks he is an alpha.
Summarize how Buck learns to be a good sled dog? Francois whips Dave's hip, and the growls of Spite
Who are the two new dogs? How are they different from each other? Billie and Joe. Billie had excessive good nature while Joe was sour and introspective
How do the new dogs respond to Spritz's attack? Billie wagged his tail appeasingly and Joe whirled around on his heels to face him.
Describe Sol-leks. What does Buck learn about him? An old husky, long and lean and gaunt, with a battle scared face. Don't go on his blind side.
By the next day, three more dogs are added to the sled team. How many are there now? total of nine
What job does Francois and Perrault have, and where is the team headed? Perrault traveled ahead of the team, packing the snow; mail carriers headed to Dawson
What did Buck learn about eating with a dog sled team? He didn't have enough to eat but they had the same and they were in good condition; Eat quick or it will be stolen
What did Buck mean when he thought, "So that was the way," Buck realizes. "No fair play." At this point in the novel, Buck realizes his new world is based on survival of the fittest
Explain how the pattern of bullying found in this chapter is still evident in today's school system. Where else in society do these patters still exist? In some public schools and high schools timid people are bullied but aggressive people avoid being bulled; sports teams and prisons.
Explain how the title of this chapter helps reinforce the idea of ancestral memories. Because of Bucks dominance over the others he is learning his ancestral memories
What caused the fight between Buck and Spitz? What interrupted the fight? Spitz was in Buck's sleeping hole. The hungry huskies invade camp
Why do you suppose Fracois encouraged Buck to fight Spitz? He liked Buck better and the fight was inevitable.
Summarize the battle with the huskies. They come in and knock over the food and attack the sled team. They realize they are outnumbered and retreat.
After the fight, what is Francois worried about? That the huskies have rabies and they gave it to their dogs.
Why is the last four hundred miles of trail the most difficult? Explain The lakes are partially melted. 1/2 of the food was gone and they couldn't have them fighting.
Explain what happened to Dolly. She went mad and had to get put down.
Why did Spitz receive his biggest beating so far from Francois? Explain Because Spitz had attacked Buck while seeing about Dolly.
Why is a fight to the death imminent for Spitz and Buck? Which sides are Francois and Perrault on? They both have dominant alpha instincts. Francois - Buck Perrault - Spitz
Explain how Buck threatens Spitz's leadership. He sides with the other dogs while Spitz was disciplining them.
Discuss what caused the final battle between Buck and Spitz Buck was trying to catch a rabbit and Spitz killed it.
Explain how Buck used his imagination and intelligence to beat Spitz. Spitz goes for him and Buck fakes his move and goes for the beg and breaks it
What is the matter with Dave? He is sick and can't keep up with the sled team.
What motivated Buck to attack Sol-leks? Sol-leks was in the lead spot where Buck should have been.
How does Sol-leks respond? He showed plainly that he was afraid of Buck.
How did Buck respond when Francois came back with a club? He circled just beyond the range of the club, snarling with bitterness and rage
Explain how Perrault settled the matter. Tells Francois put the club down and puts Buck in the lead position.
Describe Buck's leadership abilities, and explain how he is superior to Spits. Buck got the sled team to work fast.
Explain why the team was extremely popular once they arrive in Skaguay. They averaged 40 miles a day and they were early.
Why did Perrault and Francois depart from the sled team? Who is the new commander? They got orders to return home. A scotch half breed.
How did the new men connect to Buck's visions? It reminded Buck of primitive times when humans lived in caves and used animal skins.
