Instructor In-House- they do not fly out on the line
Instructor AQP-V Instructor Check Airmen-Instructors that are qualified to give MO's and administer 3 TOL's for currency
Check Airmen (Check Pilot) Pilots that fly the line and are qualified to give SIM's and Line Checks
TGS Technical Ground School-built as RGT
Crew Scheduling System-(CSS) What training scheduling and crew scheduling use to adjust Pilot's schedules
CWA Crew web access-the pilot version of CSS where they log in to see their schedule
Pilot's Board Refers to the pilots schedule in CSS
OQS Recordkeeping FAA certified record keeping program where all training records are entered
OQS Scheduling The program used to see the SIM and Classroom Schedules
Base A SWA city where pilots begin and end their scheduled assignments SWA has 11 where all trips start and end from Bases are DAL, DEN, ATL, PHX, MCO, MDW, BWI, LAX, LAS, HOU, OAK
LIMO's must enter so CSS thinks the trip is Base to Base, we do this when a trip is a non-based city.
NM Deadhead This is an actual flight with no pay, the person is not flying the aircraft
DM Deadhead This is an actual flight with pay, the person is not flying the aircraft
Training Deadhead (TRDH) This is when we bring the person to training and or leaving training. This is a confirmed seat, but they have to arrange it thru their base coordinators and it is paid
Aircrew Program Designee (APD) Allowed to act as FAA to issue Type Ratings
Airline Transport Pilot (ATP) Pilot license, required to fly for commercial aviation
Advanced Qualification Program (AQP) Program approved by the FAA, Data driven
Advanced Qualification Program Validator-(AQP-V) Instructor Check Airmen-they do not fly the line
Advanced Qualification Program Evaluator (AQP-E) -Line Check Airmen- Pilots that still fly the line
Bid Line Monthly schedule awarded to pilots by Crew Planning via seniority based system
Block Flight time, total time from the moment the aircraft first moves for the purpose of flight until it is parked after the completion of flight
Block-in Time that the brakes are set at the next station
Block-out Time that the brakes are released at departure station
Champs Primary program used to manage hotel needs for pilots on overnights during a pairing
Crew Scheduling The Flight Ops department responsible for ensuring all SWA flights are staffed with the required number of pilots and ensuring pilot legalities
Commuter A pilot who does not live in a Base
Crew Planning Builds/Awards the monthly schedules for the pilots
Crew Payroll Makes adjustments to pilot pay/submits to finance and answers pilots pay questions
Continuous Qualification Training (CQT) The annual training all pilots must complete in the AQP cycle. Consists of the Technical Ground School, Maneuvers Observation, and Line Oriented Evaluation
Domicile Time Local time of a pairings domicile used to calculate Contractual/FAR duty/block limits
EFB Electronic Flight Bag, a device issued to all pilots that contains all manuals required for flight
Enhanced Line Improvement Trip Trade (eLITT) Automated system used by pilots to trade flying with the company
FAR Federal Aviation Regulation
Fatigue Physiological state in which there is a decreased capacity in performance
FAR 117 Flight, duty, and rest regulation currently governing SWA operations
Flight Duty Period (FDP) Begins when a pilot is required to report for duty with the intention of conducting a flight/series of flights and ends when the A/C is parked after the last flight and there is no intention of further A/C movement
Flight Operations Department at SWA managing all areas related to pilots
Flight Operations Training Manual (FOTM) Agreement with the FAA of how and what we train
Flight Training Device-(FTD) A ground training device that has no motion
Heads Up Guidance System (HGS) Only CA's have access and are required to have training on/maintain currency on
Lance Captain (LC) A first officer who is qualified as a Captain
Latest Wheels Up (LWU) A specific time a pilot would need to get airborne on any given flight in order to be blocked in to the terminating city without violating a federal regulation (taxi out to off the ground)
Legality Term used by department to discuss Federal Regulations and or Contractual rules as they pertain to a pilots schedule
Leadership Ground Training (LGT) A special ground school for CA upgrades that upgraded 6 months prior
Line Oriented Flight Training (LOFT) Training in a full motion SIM that simulated a real flight
Max Block In (MBI) The latest time a pilot can be projected to block in on a segment to be considered legal for take off, always in Herb time
Max Taxi Out (MTO) The amount of block time available for a pilot to taxi out in order to get airborne and blocked in to the terminating city without violating a federal regulation (taxi out to off the ground)
Open Time Scheduling application within CSS used to award uncovered flying to a pilot beyond their bid line
OQS- Operations Qualification System The official pilot record keeping system approved by the FAA
Pairing Also referred to as a trip, a scheduled sequence of flights assigned to a pilot to work
Pullsheets Database where Flight Operations store permanent records on all pilots
Read Before FLY (RBF) Briefing memos pilots are required to read before starting each shift
Read Before Scheduling (RBS) Briefing memos schedulers are required to read before starting each shift
Report The time at which a pilots work day begins and they are expected to be on airport property
Release Time at which a pilots work day ends, occurring 30 minutes after block in of last flight
Reserve A block of 1, 2, or 3 days in which a pilot is on call to work pairings as needed
Skysolver Scheduling program used to track all FAR and Contractual Legalities pertaining to pilots
SWAPA Southwest Airlines Pilot Association, Union representing SWA pilots
SWIFT Southwest Inflight Tracking, a program used by NOC employees to monitor flight times and A/C information
Training Guaranteed Day Off (TGDO) Pilots are allowed to use up to 4 consecutive TGDO's to block any training or traveling to training on those days
Trips for Pay (TFP) Monetary unit by which Pilots are compensated, converts to dollar amounts
Window of Circadian Low-Period (WOCL) Period of time when an individual experiences maximum sleepiness defined as occurring between 0200-0559
Additional Flight Training (AFT) Used for when Pilots need extra training beyond the normal requirements
CISM Critical Incident Stress Management It is a peer support program assisting Crew Members after stressful events
Dispatch Department located in the NOC monitoring aircraft needs and driving decision making of operations/flight status during irregular operations
Federal Air Marshal (FAM) A department of Homeland Security employee responsible for preventing hijackings
Pilot in Command (PIC) The pilot who is directly responsible for and is the final authority as to the operation of the aircraft. This is the Captain, in the Captains absence it is the FO
Taxi Out Time the plane leaves the gate to the time it gets wheels up/airborne
Taxi In Time the plane touches the ground to the time it gets to the gate
Trip Trade Give Away (TTGA) Automated system used by pilots to trade flying with each other
Crew Resource Management (CRM) A practice of open communication between all Crew Members working a flight, designed to reduce errors and increase safety
Crew Web Access (CWA) Web based Pilot scheduling program accessed thru SWALIFE. Pilots check in for pairings and keep track of their schedules
Misconnect Instance occurring where a pilot is landing in a station later than scheduled due to IROPS and will not be on the ground in time for their next scheduled flight on another A/C
Outstation A city served by SWA with no Crew Base or Provisioning station
Turn A scheduled pairing with no overnights, it originates and returns to base the same day
WMP Will make push. A pilot who alerts Crew Scheduling that they will miss scheduled check in time but arrive at the airport before scheduled departure
Who can give an MO Instructor AQP-V or CKAM
Who can seat support and MO Instructor AQP-V or Open time vs. Mando AQP-V
Who can give an LOE CKAM
Who can seat support and LOE Another trainee or Open Time
Who can give Type PC or Oral APD CKAM
Who can seat support Type PC and Oral Oral- no seat support PC-Open Time CA preferred
