Fractions
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| numerator | The number that is on top of the fraction. It tells the number of parts being asked about. |
| denominator | The number that is on the bottom of a fraction. It represents the total number of equal parts or objects. |
| Fraction | A fraction can be used to name part of an object or part of a set of objects. |
| Unit Fraction | A fraction that represents one part of the whole. For example, 1/2, 1/3, 1/4. |
| Halves | 0/2, 1/2, 2/2 denominator of 2 |
| Thirds | 0/3,1/3,2/3,3/3 denominator of 3 |
| Fourths | 0/4,1/4,2/4,3/4,4/4 denominator of 4 |
| Sixths | 0/6,1/6,2/6,3/6,4/6,5/6,6/6 denominator of 6 |
| Eights | 0/8,1/8,2/8,3/8,4/8,5/8,6/8,7/8,8/8 denominator of 8 |
| Whole | All of the parts or objects |
| Part of a whole | The part being identified. It could be how many are shaded or not shaded. It could be how many objects are strawberries or how many are bananas. |
| Sum of unit fractions | decomposing a fraction into parts. 3/4=1/4+1/4+1/4 Remember a unit fraction is ONE part of the whole. |
