| cunning | getting what is wanted in a clever and often deceptive way |
| rendezvous | an arrangement to meet someone at a particular time and place, often secretly |
| effigy | a sculpture or model of a person intended to be damaged or destroyed in a protest or out of anger |
| febrile | full of nervous excitement or activity |
| pilfer | to steal (usually things of little value) |
| arbitrary | decided or arranged without any reason or plan, often unfairly |
| austere | severe in manner or appearance |
| avaricious | extreme greed; need for wealth |
