The author, Tim O’Brien, describes all the things the men had to carry throughout the first chapter. Why does he take so much time and go into detail with all of these items? To help the reader understand the physical and emotional weight the soldiers carried with them into war.
Why do several of the men hang onto things from women back in the states who they aren’t even in a relationship with anymore? Carrying these objects gave them a sense of home, gave them hope, and reminded them they had something to return home to.

What can be inferred about Martha’s feelings towards Lieutenant Jimmy Cross? She has no romantic feelings for him and likes him only as a friend
When space is limited and every ounce counts, why is it that soldiers carry these "nonessential" items? Sentimental items can be considered essential to survival during the tense moments of war, and personal items allowed the men to have some autonomy, a sense of individuality and symbolically represents who they are.
What was ironic about Lee Strunk carrying a slingshot as his weapon of "last resort." Out of the list of high powered, destructive weapons, Strunk's weapon of "last resort" is a sling shot-"there would never be a shortage of ammunition"
What are examples of objects that the characters carry as part of their jobs or field specialty? Cross-compass, maps, officer's pistol; Lavender-extra ammo; Dobbins-M60 machine gun and ammo for it; Sanders-radio; Kiley-surgical tape, malaria tablets, and other medical supplies
Why did Lieutenant Cross burn Martha's letters? He felt guilty for allowing his mind to drift off and daydream about Martha instead of staying focused on the mission and safety of his platoon.
