Unit 4 Learning

Unit 4 Learning Statements - Global Weather Patterns

TermDefinition
Hurricane Formation Develop near the equator because of the warmer ocean water temperatures
Ocean Currents Move water based on the temperature of the water
Water Comparison Gulf of Mexico is warm ocean water while the Pacific Ocean is colder ocean water
Cause of Convection Currents uneven heating of the Earth by the Sun
Convection Currents produced because heated particles rise in liquids and gases
Convection Currents warm fluids go up while cold fluids go down
Fluid liquid or gas
Why do cold fluids go down? Cold liquid or air goes down due to molecules being closer together increasing density
Why do warm fluids go up? Warm liquid or gas goes up because molecules spread apart and move away from one another decreasing density
Differences in Temperatures Cause differences in air pressure and create convection currents in air masses causing: high and low pressure systems warm and cold fronts
Low Pressure Systems Represented by "L" and bring stormy weather Lousy Lows with warmer and wetter weather
Low Pressure Systems Lousy Lows with warmer and wetter weather
Low Pressure Systems *Air rises *As the air rises, it cools and causes condensation. The condensation creates clouds and then precipitation. *Air flows counter clockwise
High Pressure System Represented by "H" and bring clear weather
High Pressure Systems Happy Highs with cooler and drier weather
High Pressure Systems *Air Sinks *As the air sinks, it moves away at the Earth's surface causing air above to fill in on top of the cooler air *Air flows clockwise
Air Pressure measure of the weight of the atmosphere
Front Movement Warm Fronts travel North (up) while Cold Fronts travel South (down)
Warm Fronts Warm fronts travel up and are represented by a line with semi-circles and bring warmer weather
Cold Fronts Cold fronts travel down are represented by a line with triangles and bring cooler weather
Weather Fronts transition zones or changes in air masses
Energy Transfer The sun's thermal energy converts to mechanical energy of wind and ocean currents because warm fluids rise and cold air sinks.
Ocean Water Evaporation creates fronts that cause precipitation to fall on land
Ocean Currents due to warmer water moving up while colder water moves down

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
