Atomic Theory Part 2
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Valence Electrons | The electrons farthest from the nucleus; they are responsible for atoms forming compounds |
| Molecule | 2 or more atoms chemically combined |
| Compound | 2 different atoms chemically combined |
| Mixture | A combination of 2 or more different atoms or molecules that are not chemically combined |
| Covalent Bond | Chemical bond between 2 nonmetals |
| Ionic Bond | Chemical bond between a metal and a nonmetal |
| Octet Rule | Elements are stable when their valence shell is full. This can be done with 8 or in some cases 2 electrons. |
| Alkali Metals | Found on the far left of the periodic table. React and lose luster quickly. 1 Valence electron. |
| Alkali Earth Metals | Found on the left of the periodic table. Soft metals that react to water. 2 Valence electrons. |
| Transition Metals | Found on the middle of the periodic table. Less reactive than the other families of metals. 3-12 Valence electrons. |
| Halogens | Found on the right of the periodic table before Inert Gases. Poor conductors and very reactive. 7 Valence electrons. |
| Inert Gases | Found on the far right of the periodic table. Do not form compounds; Not reactive. 8 Valence electrons |
