Atomic theory pt.2
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Valence electrons | the electrons farthest from the nucleus, they are responsible fro atoms forming compounds. |
| Molecule | 2 or more atoms chemically combined |
| Compound | 2 different atoms chemically combined Examples H2O, NH3 |
| mixture | a combination of 2 or more different atoms or molecules that are not chemically combined. Example chocolate milk, strawberry smoothie. |
| covelant bond | chemical bond between 2 non metals |
| ionic bond | chemical bond between a metal and nonmetal |
| octet rule | elements are stable when their valence shell is full. This can be done with 8 or in some cases 2. |
| Element | A pure substance (one type of atom) |
| Alkali metals | Very reactive, loosely bound electrons. |
| Alkali Earth metals | Reactive, 2 valence electrons |
| Transition | All highly reactive, Have a lot of electrons |
| Halogens | Poor conductors, 7 electrons in outer shell. |
| Inert Gases | Not reactive, 8 valence eletrons. |
