What is periodontal disease? Accumulation of plaque and tartar. Mild to severe.
What can calcified tartar under the gumline lead to? Toothe loosening etc.
What is plaque? Soft material easily removed
What is hard tartar? Erosion of gumline abcessed teeth, halitosis, tooth loss.
What is the path of least resistence? Sinus cavity
Whats the treatment for periodontal disease? Ultrasonic scaling, extractions, antibiotics, dentrificies, chew toys, mouth washes
What is dentrificies? Tooth paste for dogs
What is feline root resorption? root of tooth resorbs, causes gingivitis, fill erosion.
How is a Feline Root Resorption taken care of? Extraction: fragils easily broken
What is Epulis? Benign excessive growth of gingival tissue, must differentiate from oral neoplasia, excised @ time of dental
What is chondrosarcoma malignant tumor of connective tissue. second most common primary tumor of the bone
Give examples of oral neoplasia Squamous cell carcinoma, malignant melanoma
What is oral neoplasia? oral tumors.
What is squamous cell carcinoma? Very aggressive, poor prognosis, excise of debulk mass: comes back. type of skin cancer
What is malignant melanoma? Poor prognosis. Melanoma can metastasize (spread) to any area of the body especially the lymph nodes and lungs.
What signs are seen with malignant melanoma? Lymph node swelling or enlargement
What is Eosinophilic Granuloma Complex? Raised masses, lips, gums, palates, Infiltration of Eosinophils may reoccur
What is another term for Eosinophilic Granuloma Complex? Rodent Ulcers
What is the treatment for Eosinophilic Granuloma Complex? Injectable corticosteroids
What is secondary to megaesophagus? Hypothyroidism, myasthenia gravis
What is myasthenia gravis? is a neuromuscular disorder characterized byvariable weakness of voluntary muscles, which often improves withrest and worsens with activity.
What is Megaesophagus? Esophagus loses tone and dilates
Megaesophagus is prone to what? Regurgitation, Aspiration Pneumonia
How do you treat Megaesophagus? Elevate food, feed hruel, treat underlying disease
With megaesophagus there is a greater risk of what? Aspirating
Persistent Right aortic arch is common in who? German shepard
What is Persistent Right aortic arch ? the right aortic arch persists, which causes obstruction of the esophagus at the level of the heart base. esophagus is encircled by the persistent arch on the right.
What is GDV? Gastric Dilation and Volvulus
What is Gastric Dilation and Volvulus? AKA:Bloat, acute onset
Who does Gastric Dilation and Volvulus happen to? Fast eaters, indiscriminate eaters
What should you do to prevent bloat? Exercise
Who is GDV more prebalent in? Deep chested dogs
What are signs of GDV? Abdominal distention, retching, shock, collapse, acute death
What is PVC? Premature Ventricular Contraction
Who is PVC common in? HBC: hit by car, GDV: Gastric dilation and volvulus
Which dogs are considered deep chested? Greyhounds, boxers
What does Volvulus mean? To twist or rotate
Prokinetics keep what moving? The gut
Is GDV a medical emergency? Yes
What do they do in a GDV emergncy? Stomach tube, Gastrostomy, IV Fluids: Big bore, use both legs!
What is peritonitis? Inflammation of abdominal cavity.
What can GDV cause? peritonitis, gastric wall necrosis, PVC'S
What is gastric wall necrosis? black or green serosal surface, thinning of the gastric wall.
What SX is done for GDV? Gastropexy
What is Gastropexy? Tack to the body walls so it doesn't rotate
What is teh success rate of GDV Sx? as low as 50% success rate
What is gastritis? Inflammation of the gastric mucosa
Gastritis can be due to what? Viral, bacterial, parasitic, dietary, FB common
What is FB? Foreign Body
What are symptoms of gastritis? Anorexia, vomiting, Dehydration
What is the treatment for Gastritis? Antibiotics, antiemetics: metoclopramide, Chlorpromazine, H2 blockers:Cimetidine etc. Remove FB, bland diets
What is pyloric stenosis? Hypertrophy of teh muscles in the region of the pylorus. Gastic contents cannon enter into duodenum
What are Symptoms of pyloric Stenosis? Vomiting
What is the treatment for pyloric myotomy? Sx treatment
What is Pyloric Myotomy? hypertrophy of the circular muscle of the pylorus.resulting in narrowing and obstruction of the pyloric channel by compression of longitudinal folds of mucosa.
What are Miscellaneous Gastric Diseases? Parasitic: physoloptera. Neoplais:Gastric adenocarcinoma, Lymphosarcoma, Gastric Ulcers and eriosions: Coffee Grounds, often vomiting, FB: Coins, Thongs, towels, batteries, rocks etc.
