Key Terms

TermDefinition
Critical Listening A process that involves both listening for information and evaluating information
Empathy The ability to put oneself into another's place; to understand what and why a person feels, believes, or acts in a certain way.
Hearing The sense through which sound is received; a passive physical process.
Listening Concentrating on a sound, interpreting, and reacting to it. It is a mental process that requires active participation by a receiver.
Precision Exactness; the ability to distinguish clearly.
Retention The ability to remember and recall information.
Selective listening Listening so as to block out what one doesn't want to hear.
