| Critical Listening | A process that involves both listening for information and evaluating information |
| Empathy | The ability to put oneself into another's place; to understand what and why a person feels, believes, or acts in a certain way. |
| Hearing | The sense through which sound is received; a passive physical process. |
| Listening | Concentrating on a sound, interpreting, and reacting to it. It is a mental process that requires active participation by a receiver. |
| Precision | Exactness; the ability to distinguish clearly. |
| Retention | The ability to remember and recall information. |
| Selective listening | Listening so as to block out what one doesn't want to hear. |
