| argument | when the author supports his/her position with logical reasoning and evidence |
| citation | a quote from or reference to a book, paper, or author that a writer uses to further support |
| reasons | opinion based statements that tell the reader WHY they should believe the claim |
| commentary | remarks or observations, usually connected in a loose narrative |
| evidence | facts, details, and examples that support whether the argument is true or valid |
| claim | main point the writer is trying to make; the position (pro/con) |
| counterclaim | the opposing view; disagrees with the claim |
| rebuttal | when a speaker or writer uses arguments and presents reasoning or evidence intended to undermine or weaken the claim of an opponent |
| bias | a tendency to lean in a certain directions |
| formal style | in speech or writing it refers to in an impersonal, objective, and precise use of language |
