Term Definition
Atomic number The number of protons in the nucleus
Isotope Atoms of the same element a different number of protons
Relative atomic mass Average mass of an atom on a scale where an atom of 12C is 12
Relative isotopic mass Mass of an atom of an isotope on a scale where an atom of 12C is 12
Absorption spectrum Has dark lines on a coloured background
Emission spectrum Has bright lines on a dark background
Mass number Total number of protons and neutrons in the nucleus
Cause of absorption spectrum Electrons absorb certain frequencies corresponding to differenced between the energy levels. This means the radiation passing has certain frequencies missing
