what is the form of a poem distinctive way the words are arranged
what are the graphic elements? the length and placement of lines and the way they are grouped into stanzas.
what is a stanza? it is similar to a paragraph in a narrative writing, each stanza conveys a unified idea and contributes to a poem's overall meaning
What is the "From The Fire of Driftwood" about? The good times one has with friends and the painfulness but of separation
What is traditional form of poetry? it follows fixed rules, regular rhythm and rhyme
what is the organic form of poetry? does not have a regular pattern of rhythm and might not rhyme. may use unconventional spelling, punctuation, and grammar. includes free verse and concrete poetry
What is "i am not done yet" about? it is an organic poem with no punctuation that talks about the possiblility one has and that they continue to be where they have always been
what is prosody? the meter and rhyme of a poem
what is rhythm? the pattern of stressed and unstressed syllables in each line.
what is meter? a regular pattern of rhythm
what are unstressed syllables marked with? a little curve thing like this (, but horizontal
what are stressed syllables marked with? an accent mark like this ', but more slanty
what is repetition? a sound, word, phrase, or line that is repeated for emphasis and unity
what is alliteration? the repetition of consonant sounds at the beginnings of words
what is consonance? the repetition of consonant sounds within and at the ends of words. "and blaCK are the waters that sparKled so green."
what is assonance? the repetition of vowel sounds in words that do not end with the same consonant. "the wAves brEAk fold on jewelled fold"
What is "We Real Cool" about? the rebellious attitude of pool players
what is "Base Stealer" about? the risk and anxiousness of stealing bases in baseball
what is a hyperbole? an exaggeration for emphasis or humorous effect
what is "Midsummer, Tobago" about? The peace and beauty of the beach and all the memories the writer had there.
What is "from Horses" about? the author's life was not complete until the 10 beautiful horses strode out. They filled his world after this
What is "Ex-Basketball Player" about? Flick Webb and all the basketball potential he used to have, but now he has no life and is working at a gas pump
What is "Slam, Dunk, and Hook" about? The lines flow like the fast pace of a basketball game. it shows the swiftness and beauty of the basketball team
What is "Theme for English B" about? Langston Hughes is supposed to write about what he is thinking, but he is not sure he can do that. he is colored, twenty two, and born in Winston-Salem. He does not think his paper should be treated differently than the others, but he knows he is not free
What is "Mother to Son" about? Life not being an easy journey for this black mother. They use an extended metaphor about a staircase being like an old rotting staircase. She is telling him to keep trekking
What is "Stopping by the Woods on A Snowy Evening" about? He is feeling depressed and wants to give up. But he knows that he has miles to go before the rest of death and that he has promises to keep
What is "Mending Wall" about? Nature keeps destroying the wall that these two neighbors put up. The speaker sees the downfalls of the wall but he only sees his neighbor when they put this fence up together.
What is "Bonny Barbara Allen" about? William tries to get beatiful Barbara to kiss him so he will not be sick anymore, but she tells him he was carrying on drunkenly with other women. he ends up dying and she regrets her decision to be "hardhearted Barbara Allen"
What is "Heart! We WIll Forget Him" about? Her heart is broke and not a part of her anymore. Her head can get over the love she once had, but her heart can't.
What is "Shall I compare Thee to a Summer's Day?" about? William Shakespeare talks about how the beauty of this woman is far more beautiful than a summer's day. Her beauty will not fade and she will not die because the poem will live on forever. It is more about poetry living on forever rather than her beauty
