Migration and Culture

What is culture? The way of life or behaviors shared by a group of people
What are some things that are part of a person's culture? Religion, language, foods, clothing, etc.
What is the definition of "urban"? City area
What is cultural diffusion? The movement or spreading out of beliefs or behaviors from one area to another
Give some examples of cultural diffusion. Mexican, Chinese, Italian food is popular in the U.S. Baseball and soccer are popular in countries all over the world. Religions have spread all over the world.
What is migration? Movement of people from one place or region to another
What are "push factors"? Negative things that make a person want to leave a place
What are "pull factors"? Positive things that attract a person to a place
What are some ENVIRONMENTAL factors that might cause a person to migrate? climate, natural disaster
What are some SOCIAL factors that might cause a person to migrate? discrimination, religious freedom, racism
What are some POLITICAL factors that might cause a person to migrate? war, unstable government
What are some ECONOMIC factors that might cause a person to migrate? job opportunities, cost of living
What is the definition of "rural"? Country area
What is the definition of "immigrate"? To move IN to a country
What is the definition of "emigrate"? To EXIT and move OUT of a country
What is the definition of "refugee"? A person who is forced to flee his/her country for safety
If you see or hear about something from another culture, instead of saying "Weird!" or "Gross!", what could you say instead? "That's different," or "That's interesting," or "Tell me more about...", or "Help me understand..."
What are some ways that cultural diffusion happens? Cultures can spread because of migration, wars, missionaries, mass media
