Proportionality
Math 7 Material Module 2
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Constant | A value that does not change. |
| Rate | A ratio that compares two different quantities that are measured in different units. THINK.... Miles per hour |
| Ratio | A comparison of two quantities. Think division. Examples; 2:5, 2 to 5, and 2/5. |
| Constant of Proportionality | A constant ratio of two variables (x,y) that are related proportionally. THINK... x & y table and your m= value. |
| Proportional | An equation that displays two ratios that are the same! Examples; 6/8=3/4 4/6=2/3 *Graph represents a line. *The line must pass through the origin (0,0) *There is a CONSTANT rate! |
| Unit Rate | When rates are expressed as a quantity of 1, such as 2 feet per second or 5 miles per hour. |
| Non-Proportional | A graph of a line that does not cross through the origin and has no Constant Rate of Proportionality. |
| y=mx | The equation for the Constant Rate of Proportionality. |
| m=y/x | How to calculate the unit rate. |
| Labeling the Constant Rate of Proportionality | If x represents HOURS and y represents MILES I need to make sure that my Constant Rate of Proportionality label displays y/x relationship! Example; Miles/hours = Miles per hour |
