Reeves ES Biosphere

Reeves ES Ecosystems and the Biosphere: Biomes of the World

QuestionAnswer
Veldt In Africa, grasslands are known by this name
Phytoplankton plant-like organisms that are the producers in aquatic ecosystems
Tundra cold, treeless, has permafrost, largest and northernmost biome
Eutrophic Lake a lake that is rich in organic matter and vegetation but is oxygen poor
Tropical Rain Forrest most productive of all biomes, year-round growing season, abundant rainfall
Temperate Grassland dominated grassland, rich fertile soils, and can support large herds of grazing animals
Oligotrophic Lake lake that contains little organic matter, but is relatively high in oxygen content
Wetland ecosystem in which water either covers the soil or is present at or near the surface of the soil for at least part of the year
Swamp area looks like a flooded forest
Eutrophication a process by which nutrients particularly phosphorus and nitrogen, become highly concentrated in a body of water
Bogs wetlands that are dominated by mosses, usually in depressions where water collects. often very acidic
Aphotic Zone cold and dark part of the ocean that receives no sunlight
Hydro thermal Vent area releases water that is rich in minerals and often exceeds 750 degrees Celsius
Biome lard region characterized by specific type of climate and certain types of plant and animal communities
Desert receives less than 10 inches of rain a year, plants must have adaptations to help reduce water loss
Taiga bitterly cold winters, summers are mild and long enough for the ground to thaw, dominated by cone-bearing trees, just south of the Tundra
Plankton communities of small, free-floating organisms that can live in both fresh and salt water
Oceanic Zone deep water of the open ocean that begins at the edge of the continental shelf and extends outward
Temperate Deciduous Forest This biome is characterized by trees that lose all of their leaves in the autumn months
Intertidal Zone area along the ocean shorelines that is repeatedly covered and uncovered by ocean tides
Chaparral biome has a high risk of fire because of the growth of dense low plants and the hot dry summer
Epiphytes small plants, such as mosses and orchids, that live in the branches of trees
Savanna a tropical or subtropical grassland with scattered trees and shrubs that has alternating wet and dry seasons
Estuary area occurs where freshwater rivers and streams flow into the sea
River a body of water that flows down a gradient or slope toward its mouth
Tolerance the ability to survive and reproduce under conditions that differ from optimal zones
Neritic Zone area of the ocean is relatively shallow and extends outward over the Continental shelf
Marshes areas are shallow wetlands along rivers. often contain cattails, rushes and other tall grasses
Photic Zone part of the ocean that receives sunlight
Benthic Zone ocean floor
Zoo Plankton animal like organisms that are primary consumers of phytoplankton
Upwelling strong current that brings nutrients up from the ocean floor
