Story Elements

| Setting | Where and when a story takes place |
| Plot | The series of events within a story |
| Character | Who is in the story |
| Theme | The author's message or lesson about life in one word (typically) |
| Mood | Feeling created through the description of the setting: spooky, peaceful, or tense... |
| Protagonist | The main character |
| Antagonist | Force or character working against the main character |
| Dynamic | A character who changes |
| Static | A character who stays the same |
| Flat | A character who is not well described |
| Round | A character who is well described |
| Characterization | An author's intense description of a character (actions, speech, inner thoughts and feelings, what others say, environment, and appearance) |
| Central Conflict | The main problem of the story |
| Exposition | Beginning of a story...characters and setting are introduced |
| Inciting Event | The point in the story when the action begins and the story changes direction. |
| Rising Action | Conflicts occur as as the problems build leading to the climax |
| Climax | The turning point in the story; the main character is often changed by this event |
| Falling Action | Problems are solved and the story begins to draw to a close |
| Resolution | The story ends and we know what will happen to the characters |
| Flashback | The author goes back in time to explain something that happened before the story began |
| Foreshadowing | The author drops clues about what will happen later in the story |
| Irony | The opposite of what is expected or meant |
| Symbolism | An image or object or word representing a bigger idea or emotion |
| Imagery | Intense description |
| Metaphor | That girl is a cheetah on the field! |
| Simile | I love you like I love blueberry pancakes. |
| Hyperbole | I have already seen this movie 5,000 times! |
| Personification | The wind whistled through the trees. |
| Motivation | What drives a character to behave a certain way |
| Traits | Words used to describe a character's personality and their physical appearance |
| 1st Person POV | The narrator is a character in the story and tells the story from his/her perspective (I,ME,OURS...) |
| 2nd Person POV | This POV belongs to the person being addressed (YOU) |
| 3rd Person Omniscient POV | The story is told by an outside narrator who can share ALL characters' thoughts and feelings |
| 3rd Person Limited Omniscient POV | The story is told by an outside narrator who can share only ONE character's thoughts and feelings |
| 3rd Person Objective POV | The story is told by an outside narrator who cannot share any character's thoughts or feelings |
| Man vs. Man | An external conflict between two characters |
| Man vs. Self | An internal conflict a character has within him/herself |
| Man vs. Nature | An external conflict between a character and a natural occurrence (animal, weather, etc...) |
| Man vs. Society | An external conflict between a character and a rule or law or pressure from the world and culture around them |
| Central Idea | A sentence which explains the specific lesson learned by the characters in a story or a message from the author |
