Sugar Act | lowered the tax on molasses the colonists imported (in hopes it would keep them from smuggling) also allowed officers to seize goods from smugglers without going to court |
Townshend Acts | tax on imported goods such as glass, tea, and paper. Tax was to be paid before the goods were brought inside the colonies. |
Committee of correspondence | -an organization that spread political ideas and information through the colonies. |
Boston Massacre | a deadly clash between British soldiers and a Boston mob in 1770. British reinforcements killed 5 men and wounded others. |
Boston Tea Party | Bostonians protested the Tea Act of 1773, by disguising themselves as Mohawk Indians and dumping tea owned by the British East India Company, into the water. |
Intolerable Acts | (Parliaments response for the Boston Tea Party) closed the Port of Boston to all shipping. This was to remain in effect until the colonists paid for the dumped tea. It also decreased the power of local authority and increased power of royal authority. |

Minutemen | -civilian sworn to be ready to fight with only one minute’s notice |
Loyalist | -American colonist who remained loyal to Britain and opposed the war for independence |
