Text Features

TermDefinition
heading tells the readers what a section of a text is about. It can help readers locate information quickly.
bulleted list a list of items shown with symbols (like dots) instead of numbers to make information easy to read.
sidebar a separate box of text that gives extra facts or interesting information related to the main text.
picture/photograph an image of a real person, place, thing, or event that helps readers understand what they are reading.
caption explains what a picture, photograph, or graphic shows.
diagram a drawing that shows the parts of something or explains how something works.
graph or chart shows facts or information in a visual way to help readers understand data.
map a drawing that shows where places or things are located.
graphic feature any visual element (like pictures, maps, charts, or diagrams) that helps readers understand information.
text feature parts of a text that help readers find information quickly and understand the text better.
bar graph uses bars to compare information or show amounts.
table organizes information in rows and columns so readers can compare facts easily.
title tells what the entire text is mostly about.
italics slanted letters used to show special words or titles.
bold print dark, thick letters used to show important words.
glossary a list of important words and their meanings in alphabetical order, usually found at the back of a book.
index an alphabetical list that helps readers find topics and page numbers quickly, usually found in the back of a book.
table of contents shows the titles of sections or chapters and the page numbers where they can be found in the front of a book.
subheading gives more details about a heading and breaks a section into smaller parts.
subtitle the smaller line of words under the title that gives more information about the topic.
