NATURAL KNOWLEDGE: Innate sense of the divine We have an inbuilt capacity and desire to know God. We are a part of God's natural theology
John Calvin Sensus divinitatis - this is what gives us an innate sense of God. It drives us to want to know God. A natural inclination.
Innate sense: openness to beauty and goodness we can indulge in beauty e.g. reading poetry, appreciating artwork. Natural Law rests on synderesis. Conscience is joint knowledge between us and God
Innate sense: ability to reflect on God's existence We can comprehend God's existence. E.g. Arguments from Observation and Reason
NATURAL KNOWLEDGE: The order of creation What can be known of God can be seen in the design and purpose of things - a point of contact
Order of creation: design Principle of Accommodation - God shows himself in creation in ways we can understand. Nature is a 'sort of mirror', revealing God's attributes
Order of creation: purpose and process Paley's work. Teleology. Process theology = God suffers with creation
REVEALED KNOWLEDGE: Faith and God's grace Fall disrupted natural theology. We'd know God through natural knowledge 'si integer stetisset Adam'. Need faith in salvation. We have to have knowledge of God as the redeemer (known as regeneration). Require God's grace.
REVEALED KNOWLEDGE: In Jesus Jesus is the 'mirror' and mediator of god. Principle of accommodation.
In Jesus: Bible Important source for knowledge of God. Provides the 'soul of sacred theology'
In Jesus: the life of the Church Church tells the events of Jesus' life, death and resurrection. Shows God's active and specific action in the world
Argument to support sensus divnitatis: universal consent billions of religious believers. place of worship in every society = disposed to know God
