Short Story Elements

Terms we use in the short story unit and their definitions

QuestionAnswer
Plot The story line or what happened in the story
Introduction The introduction of the characters, their personalities and problems
Rising Action Building up to the climax (The beginning of a problem that leads into an even bigger problem.)
Conflict A problem
Internal When the character's problem is personal
External When the characters problem occurs from something they can't control
Climax The biggest problem in the story/when most of the action happens
Falling Action Everything that happens after the climax
Resolution The End of the story
Character The people/animals in the story
Protagonist Trying to reach a goal (main character)
Antagonist Trying to stop the protagonist from reaching their goal
Round A character with multiple traits but doesn't change through out the story
Secondary A character with one trait making them stereotypical
Flat A character who mainly has one personality and stereotype
Dynamic A character who learned a lesson throughout the story and changes
Ways to reveal a characters traits and Values -Description of the character -What they do -What they say -How other treat them/What others say about them
Setting Where the story takes place
Social Setting The type of society where the story takes place
Atmosphere Mood or emotion the story has
Imagery Something being described so well you can picture it
Connotation Words that have emotional meaning
Theme The moral of the story
A good theme statement -has a complete sentence -has the title/author of the text -states the lesson learned in the text
Irony Irony can be sarcasm, the opposite of what is expected to happen, or when the audience knows something the character's don't
Point of View Who is telling the story -1rst person (the character narrating) -3rd person limited (Narrator narrating for one character) -3rd person omniscient (Narrator narrating what multiple people are thinking)
Symbol A average object/image that has a deeper meaning in the story
Foreshadowing When the author gives hints to what might happen next in the story
Flashback When the writer writes about something in the past (possibly to explain the futur)
Suspense When the author has you on the edge of your seat
