Chapter 2 C. D.
Terms
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Neurons | brain cells that sending receive chemical and electrical pulses among each other to direct the various tasks of the brain |
| Dendrites | short, bushy cables that allow each neuron to receive signals sent by other neurons (Input) |
| Axons | means axis, long thick cables with terminal buttons that transmit all the signals from a rerun to other neurons (output) |
| Glial Cells | Brain cells that support neurons. Glial means glue. |
| Wiring | Network of fibers that carry brain signals between neurons |
| synapse | tiny gap between neurons |
| firing | chemical and electrical signal leaves the axon of one neuron and jumps the synapse to travel to the dendrite of another neuron |
| pruning | brain weeds out seldom used connections |
| myelin | fatty substance formed by glial cells wraps around longer axons and cushions the cell bodies of nuerons |
| plasticity | the brains ability to change or adapt to the environment |
| Critical periods | times when some part of the body is very vulnerable to lack of stimulation or to negative experiences |
| sensitive periods | times when the brain is best able to wire specific skills |
| window of opportunity | prime period in a child's life for developing a particular skill |
