Terms

TermDefinition
Neurons brain cells that sending receive chemical and electrical pulses among each other to direct the various tasks of the brain
Dendrites short, bushy cables that allow each neuron to receive signals sent by other neurons (Input)
Axons means axis, long thick cables with terminal buttons that transmit all the signals from a rerun to other neurons (output)
Glial Cells Brain cells that support neurons. Glial means glue.
Wiring Network of fibers that carry brain signals between neurons
synapse tiny gap between neurons
firing chemical and electrical signal leaves the axon of one neuron and jumps the synapse to travel to the dendrite of another neuron
pruning brain weeds out seldom used connections
myelin fatty substance formed by glial cells wraps around longer axons and cushions the cell bodies of nuerons
plasticity the brains ability to change or adapt to the environment
Critical periods times when some part of the body is very vulnerable to lack of stimulation or to negative experiences
sensitive periods times when the brain is best able to wire specific skills
window of opportunity prime period in a child's life for developing a particular skill
