| culture (n) | the way a group of people live and understands the world; includes ideas and beliefs, traditions, values, rules; music, art, food, dance,sports, and other ways of life |
| beliefs (n) | strong opinions; ideas believed to be true |
| impact (v) | to affect directly |
| values (n) | ideas about what is important and how to live in a way that is good or right |
| customs (n) | usual or accepted practices of a social group |
| prosperous (adj) | having wealth, success or good fortune |
| thriving (adj) | doing well or being successful |
| homeland (n) | one's native country or region |
| sustain (v) | to provide with the basic necessities of life; to keep something going or existing |
| subsistence (n) | up from below |
| descendants (n) | down, away from |
| conflict (n) | argument or fight between two opposing sides |
| treaty (n) | an agreement between two opposing sides; a document that explains the terms of the agreement |
| reservation (n) | an area of land given to Native Americans by the US Government as payment for taking their land; government forced Native Americans to live here |
| plain words (n) | words that are clear and easy to understand. |
| heed (v) | to pay attention to; take notice of |
| truce (n) | an agreement by warring parties to stop fighting |

| surrender (v) | to give up; give into an other's power or demands |
