Ecology The scientific study of the relationships that exist between the living organisms on Earth and their environment
Weather The daily conditions that exist in the atmosphere
Climate The average conditions (temperature, rainfall, etc) that exist in an area over a long period of time
O Zone A gas that exists in the upper atmosphere that protects life on Earth from harmful ultraviolet radiation
Chlorofluorocarbons ((CFC's) Molecules that are released into the atmosphere that cause damage to the ozone layer
Greenhouse The trapping of the sun's energy in the Earth's atmosphere
Heat is transported throughout the biosphere by winds and currents
Biosphere The region where all life on Earth exists
Ecosystem All of the living organisms of an area, together with their nonliving environment
Conformers Organisms that do not regulate their internal conditions
community all of the living organisms in a particular area
Autotrophs Organisms that are capable of using energy from the environment to make their own food
Population all the members of a single species
Biotic Factors The living components of the ecosystem
Abiotic Factors The nonliving components of an ecosystem
Regulators Organisms that expend energy to regulate some or all of their internal conditions are known as
Habitat an organisms address
Niche an organisms "job" or role in the ecosystem
Disturbance An event that changes a community by removing organisms from the community or by altering the availability of resources in the community
Heterotrophs Organisms that cannot make their own food, and must obtain energy from eating other organisms
Trophic level A step in the food chain that indicates an organism's position in the sequence of energy transfers
Green Plants Main autotrophs in the terrestrial ecosystems
Algae Main autotrophs in aquatic ecosystems
