Carboxylic acid A compound that has a carbonyl group bonded to a carbon atom and an -OH group, RCOOH.
Ester A compound that has a carbonyl group bonded to a carbon atom and an -OR group, RCOOR'.
Amide A compound that has a carbonyl group bonded to a carbon atom and a nitrogen atom group, RCONR'2, where the R' groups may be alkyl groups or hydrogen atoms.
Carbonyl-group substitution reaction A reaction in which a new group replaces (substitutes for) a group attached to a carbonyl-group carbon in an acyl group.
Acyl group An RC=O group.
Carboxyl group The -COOH functional group.
Acetyl group A CH3C=O group.
Carboxylate anion The anion that results from the ionization of a carboxylic acid, RCOOˉ
Carboxylic acid salt An ionic compound containing a corboxylic acid anion and a cation.
Esterification The reaction between an alcohol and a carboxylic acid to yield an ester plus water.
Saponification The reaction of an ester with aqueous hydroxide ion to yield an alchoho and the metal salt of a carboxylic acid.
Phosphate ester A compound formed by reaction of an alcohol with phosphoric acid; may be a monoester, ROPO2H2; a diester, (RO)2PO3H; or a triester, (RO)3PO; also may be a di- or triphosphate.
Phosphoryl group The -PO32- group in organic phosphates.
Phosphorylation Transfer of a phosphoryl group, -PO32, between organic molecules.
